United States federal authorities have charged Indian-imprisoned gangster Lawrence Bishnoi and his aide, Satinderjeet Singh—also known as Goldy Brar—with ordering the 2023 assassination of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Surrey, British Columbia. The charges were revealed Tuesday, July 7, 2026, in a federal indictment unsealed in Los Angeles, which identifies the target as “H.S.N.” and confirms the killing occurred on June 18, 2023, outside a Sikh temple.

The charges against Bishnoi and Brar are part of a broader, multi-national law enforcement initiative titled “Operation Hardball.” According to the FBI, this effort resulted in the arrest of 24 individuals across the U.S., Canada, and Europe, with 11 of those arrests occurring in California. In total, 37 defendants have been charged across three separate indictments. The FBI noted that two of these defendants directed their global criminal syndicates while currently imprisoned in India. Outside the U.S., three defendants were arrested in Canada and one in Spain, while seven others were already in custody. Law enforcement agencies are currently searching for 10 additional fugitives, including two in India and one in Europe.

The assassination of Nijjar previously caused a sharp decline in diplomatic relations between India and Canada. Then-Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had linked the government in New Delhi to the murder, a claim India rejected as “absurd and motivated.” The U.S. federal investigation reveals that the syndicates involved engaged in a range of criminal activities, including racketeering, extortion, targeted killings, and the international trafficking of narcotics. “Today’s coordinated operation strikes at the heart of three brutal transnational organizations that have terrorised families, exploited communities, and stolen lives,” said Patrick Grandy, Assistant Director in Charge of the FBI’s Los Angeles Field Office. First Assistant United States Attorney Bill Essayli added that authorities are working to “dismantle these criminal organizations wherever they operate.”

Legal proceedings are expected to begin immediately for the defendants arrested in the United States, with initial appearances in federal court scheduled for Tuesday. The FBI has issued a reward of up to $50,000 for information leading to the arrest of Satinderjeet Singh, who remains at large. As the investigation continues, authorities may seek the extradition of suspects held in other jurisdictions to face charges in the U.S. Royal Canadian Mounted Police Commissioner Mike Duheme stated that agencies will continue their work to preserve public safety in Canada, the United States, and abroad.
