Breaking: U.S. Secretary of Defense Austin Vows to Strengthen Ukraine’s Defense as He Steps Down
In his final appearance at the Ukraine Defense Contact Group ("Ramstein") in Germany, outgoing U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to supporting Ukraine’s defense, stressing that the conflict is a global concern.
The latest military aid package for Ukraine, announced as Austin’s swansong, includes a surge of air defense missiles, artillery ammunition, and air-to-ground missiles, along with other equipment to support Ukraine’s F-16s. The U.S. Defense Department also published a detailed list of the new assistance, which includes various types of missiles, communication systems, armored bridge systems, and small arms.
"We are making history here in Ramstein," Austin said. "We are demonstrating to the world that we stand together in the defense of freedom against those who seek to take it away." He emphasized that the truth lies in the urgency of Ukrainian resistance, adding, "The fight of the Ukrainian people matters to all of us, because this is a battle for the very core of our collective values."
Austin described leading the Kontaktgruppe as one of the greatest honors of his life and expressed excitement for a productive final meeting. The latest $2.5 billion aid package, announced just weeks before the U.S. Presidential transition, is part of a broader effort to bolster Ukraine’s defense capabilities ahead of the incoming Trump administration.
Today’s 25th Ramstein meeting, held after a four-month hiatus, reunites key partners to discuss Ukraine’s defense needs. President Volodymyr Zelensky joined remotely, with a focus on bolstering Ukrainian air defenses. The meeting also aims to map out long-term military support for Ukraine, potentially extending to 2027.
