U.S. Senator Bernie Moreno, a Republican of Colombian descent, has made clear his stance on the upcoming presidential succession in Venezuela during the inaugural session of the U.S. Congress. The event, set for January 10, 2024,sparked controversy as Nicolás Maduro is poised to take office despite widespread opposition claims of electoral fraud.
In an interview with Noticias Caracol, Sen. Moreno asserted, "The U.S. will work with Maduro because he is the one taking office. We’re not the ones choosing leaders abroad." He emphasized that U.S. interests lie in curbing drug trafficking, repatriating undocumented Venezuelan immigrants, and encouraging business ties with the U.S., away from Russia and China.
The senator, who recently took office as the first Latino to represent Ohio in the Senate, added that dialogue should commence only after free, transparent elections monitored by the international community. His remarks echo longstanding U.S. concerns over Venezuela’s democratic processes and the regime’s business dealings.
The upcoming presidential succession in Venezuela is surrounded by controversy, with Maduro’s victory in the July 28 elections heavily contested. Opposition claims of fraud are backed by 85% of the polling station acts obtained by witnesses and members of the polling stations, suggesting a victory for opposition leader Edmundo González with 67% of the vote, against Maduro’s 30%.
