U.S. Stock Futures Fall After Military Strikes Target Iran’s Larak Island

U.S. stock futures fell on Sunday evening after military strikes targeted two rocket launchers on Larak Island in Iran, sending crude oil prices higher. The escalation revived inflation anxiety just as Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh’s hawkish policy outlook pushed rate hike expectations higher for September.

Stock Futures Dip as Larak Island Strikes Trigger Middle East Energy Fears

U.S. stock index futures moved lower in overnight trading after the U.S. carried out fresh military strikes against Iran, targeting two launchers on Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz. The operation marked the first known American strikes on the country since July, disrupting what had been a period of relative calm following earlier economic pressure campaigns.

Stock futures reflected immediate downward pressure across major benchmarks. Nasdaq-100 futures fell 0.64%, while Dow Jones and S&P 500 futures declined 0.33% and 0.44%, respectively.

The weekend escalation triggered an immediate reaction in global energy markets. Brent crude futures expiring in November briefly topped $90 a barrel and traded up about 1.32% to reach $89.26 a barrel, while WTI crude futures expiring in October traded at $84.38 per barrel.

Military Exchange and Retaliation Claims in the Strait of Hormuz

The military exchange drew conflicting accounts from Washington and Tehran regarding the nature and intent of the weekend operations. According to a Fox News reporter, Tehran retaliated by launching attacks against U.S. forces stationed in Jordan.

In response to Iranian characterizations of the operation, the military pushed back strongly against allegations of unprovoked aggression.

“U.S. forces took limited, precise action against IRGC minelaying forces posing an imminent threat in the Strait of Hormuz. In essence, Iran created the threat and the U.S. military eliminated it to protect civilian mariners, commercial shipping, and the free flow of global commerce.”

Meanwhile, Iranian state rhetoric characterized the strike as a severe miscalculation. The Iranian Foreign Ministry warned that the adversary will face severe economic and military repercussions for the incursion on Larak Island, further complicating diplomatic efforts that had recently involved discussions with Oman over reopening the vital shipping lane.

Federal Reserve Rate Hike Anxiety and Jackson Hole Aftermath

The geopolitical shockwaves hit Wall Street just as investors were already digesting a decidedly hawkish signal from central bank leadership. Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh reiterated the central bank’s commitment to curbing inflation and bringing price growth down to its 2% annual target during his remarks at the Jackson Hole economic symposium.

While Warsh did not outline explicit mechanical steps for future monetary policy, markets interpreted his tone as an acknowledgment that borrowing costs may need to stay higher for longer. Treasury yields jumped significantly in the wake of the speech, placing immediate pressure on technology and semiconductor equities.

According to CME FedWatch data, markets are pricing in a 55.9% probability that the Federal Reserve will implement a 25 basis point interest rate hike at its upcoming September 16 meeting.

Big Tech Earnings and Broader Market Performance

Despite Friday’s losses—where the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.02%, the S&P 500 dropped 0.25%, and the Nasdaq Composite slid 0.52%—indexes remained on track to finish the month higher.
