HOUSTON – The UCF women’s basketball team concluded its regular season with a 72-62 victory over Houston on Sunday afternoon at the Fertitta Center.
Dominance in the Paint
The Knights’ win was fueled by a strong inside game, with post players Khyala Ngodu and Mahogany Chandler-Roberts leading the charge. UCF outscored Houston 42-32 in the paint. This victory marks the third consecutive win over the Cougars and the second Big 12 road win of the campaign.
Ngodu secured her third 20-point double-double of the season, and is one of only four players in the Big 12 to achieve that milestone this season. Four Knights scored in double figures, with Kristol Ayson contributing a season-high 16 points.
The Knights established an early lead, taking an 11-10 advantage after the first media timeout. Ngodu led the scoring in the first quarter with nine points, contributing to a 21-19 lead at the end of the period.
Despite a gritty defensive effort from Houston in the second quarter, Ngodu and Chandler-Roberts continued to produce, though the Knights trailed 38-36 at halftime. Ngodu had 16 first-half points, five rebounds, and three blocks.
The third quarter saw a back-and-forth battle, with Savannah Scott and Jasmynne Gibson contributing to UCF’s post play. A 9-0 scoring run, capped by a three-pointer from Jacorriah Bracey, gave the Knights a 56-49 lead.
A Houston run narrowed the gap to three points with five minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. However, UCF responded with a 12-3 run in the final three minutes, securing the win with 10 free throws.
The Knights will now focus on the Big 12 Tournament in Kansas City, where they will face 11th-seeded Kansas on Wednesday at 8 p.m. From T-Mobile Center as the 14th seed.
