Gov’t Confiscates Counterfeit Money Machines from UIN Alauddin Makassar
In a significant blow to counterfeit operations, Indonesian authorities have seized machines used to produce fake currency from the grounds of UIN (State Islamic University) Alauddin Makassar. The alphabetic digital and ink drying machines, which could generate high-quality counterfeit notes, were found in the possession of Andi Ibrahim, a student at the university’s Library Science department.
The suspect, Bujuk Rayu Annar Salahuddin, was arrested in relation to the recovery, which.returned a trove of cash and materials used in the production of forged banknotes. The total worth of the seized money, inclusive of the counterfeits, is estimated to be around Rp. 740 trillion.
According to a statement by the Central Bank of Indonesia (Bank Indonesia), the seized machines were capable of creating counterfeit notes with a high degree of authenticity. Authorities believe that the syndicate behind this operation was targeting high-value denominations, potentially posing a significant threat to Indonesia’s financial stability.
The counterfeit operation was sophistcated enough to have a base of operations within the library of UIN Makassar, suggesting an internal accomplice. BI is currently investigating the possibility that other university staff or students may have been involved in the illicit activity. The primary suspects, Bujuk Rayu Annar Salahuddin and Andi Ibrahim, are being detained while BI continues its inquiries.
The arrest and seizure of counterfeit production materials mark a major victory in Bandung’s long-running battle against forgery, which has caused millions in losses for Indonesian banks and consumers alike. The case serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing threat posed by counterfeit operations and the importance of vigilance in protecting against such crimes.
