A massive overnight attack involving drones, missiles, and unmanned naval systems has struck the Russian port of Novorossiysk, damaging major grain export infrastructure and hitting a critical naval base. The operation, which Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described as a unique operation,
targeted what he identified as the last major stronghold of the Russian fleet in the Black Sea.
Ukraine Strikes Key Russian Grain Terminals and Naval Base in Novorossiysk
The assault, occurring in the early hours of Wednesday, resulted in three deaths, including an eight-year-old child, and left 24 others injured, according to local officials. Regional Governor Veniamin Kondratyev confirmed that the wider Krasnodar region was targeted by several hundred drones,
causing damage to dozens of residential buildings, educational facilities, and four industrial plants.
Disruption to Global Grain Exports
The strike forced the suspension of operations at three of Russia’s largest grain terminals, rendering shipments from the port impossible due to severe infrastructure damage. According to reports, a loading gallery at the United Grain Company’s Novorossiysk Grain Plant collapsed, and several silos sustained damage. Additionally, a gallery and truck unloading facility at the Demetra-owned Novorossiysk Grain Terminal were damaged, and the KSK grain terminal was also hit.
The disruption caused immediate volatility in global agricultural markets, with Chicago wheat futures rising by approximately 3% on Wednesday. Russian officials have characterized the attack as a cynical campaign to incite chaos in the global food market. Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova stated that the strikes were exacerbating grain shortages and were serving the interests of certain Western nations. In response, Russia’s agriculture ministry announced efforts to redirect cargo flows through land routes and ports in the Baltic and Caspian Seas.
Naval Base and Infrastructure Under Fire
Beyond the grain terminals, the attack targeted the Novorossiysk naval base, where much of Russia’s Black Sea fleet has been docked after relocating from Sevastopol in occupied Crimea. President Zelenskyy stated that the operation utilized Palianytsia jet-powered drones, Neptune missiles, and unmanned naval systems to strike air-defense positions, piers, and port infrastructure.
The occupying fleet and all the infrastructure that supports it will not be safe as long as Russian aggression continues,
Zelenskyy said in a social media post.
The city of Novorossiysk declared an emergency situation on Wednesday as air defenses engaged the incoming barrage. The strikes damaged pipelines, resulting in a suspension of the city’s water supply. While Novorossiysk also serves as a critical hub for oil export infrastructure, including the Caspian Pipeline Consortium (CPC) terminal, there were no immediate indications that the oil facilities or tankers were struck during the engagement.
Escalating Black Sea Tensions
The attack marks a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict within the Black Sea, which has seen an uptick in exchange of strikes throughout the summer. The region has become a high-risk zone for maritime insurance, with quotes reportedly valid for only 24 hours.
The incident in Novorossiysk unfolded alongside intensified hostilities elsewhere, as Moscow launched its own aerial strikes against Ukraine, killing at least 11 civilians in cities such as Zaporizhzhia. The broader regional instability has prompted concerns regarding the security of international shipping routes. As the conflict extends beyond the front lines, the damage to Novorossiysk underscores the increasing vulnerability of strategic port hubs that are vital to both nations’ economies and global supply chains.
