Ukraine‘s Potential Post-Conflict Future: Expert’s Perspective
Ukrainian journalist Ivan Yakovina has shared his insights on what the future might hold for Ukraine, deviating from an ideal peace plan. The scenario he envisions is one where full Russian troop withdrawal and compensation for damages are unlikely, raising questions about the country’s post-war trajectory.
An Ideal, Yet Unlikely Scenario
Yakovina began by outlining an ideal peace plan for Ukraine. This would entail the complete withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukrainian territory and compensation for the destruction caused, including damaged infrastructure, cities, and lives lost. However, he noted that this scenario is currently unattainable.
A Realistic Outcome: A Frozen Conflict?
Yakovina believes that negotiations are more likely to result in a ceasefire rather than a full peace agreement. This would involve a halt to hostilities along the existing lines of control. Additionally, he anticipates a territorial exchange: Russia would regain the Kursk region, while Ukraine would have full control over the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions.
Russia’s Territorial Ambitions
The journalist also revealed that Russia aspires to fully control the Luhansk region, currently 1% of which remains under Ukrainian control. Moreover, he stated that Russia has significant interest in obtaining control over the Donetsk region, specifically targeting cities like Краматорск (Kramatorsk) and Славянск (Slavyansk), which have well-established infrastructure.
Precedent and Expertise
Yakovina’s predictions are grounded in previous analysis he has conducted on Ukraine’s territorial restoration and the geopolitical dynamics shaping the conflict. His insights highlight the complex nature of the ongoing crisis, emphasizing the need for nuanced understanding and informed dialogue.
