Ukraine War: Russia Accuses Ukraine of Targeting Civilians with Western Weapons, Foils Assassination Plot
In a stark escalation of its narrative around the conflict in Ukraine, Russia has accused its neighbor of deliberately targeting civilian areas with weapons supplied by the West. Moscow’s claims come as the war enters its sixth month, with both sides trading blame for increasing atrocities and deteriorating humanitarian conditions.
Russia’s defense ministry asserted that Ukraine had used Western-supplied howitzers and rockets to shell residential neighborhoods in the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics, claiming that the attacks had resulted in numerous civilian casualties and widespread destruction.
"Over the past 24 hours, Ukrainian forces, equipped with weapons received from Western countries, have conducted massive shelling of residential areas in the DPR and LPR," the ministry declared in a statement, using the acronyms for the self-proclaimed republics in eastern Ukraine.
Russia’s accusations were met with swift denial from kyiv, which maintains that its military operations are targeted and do not intentionally harm civilians. The Ukrainian government has repeatedly blamed Russia for the vast majority of civilian deaths and suffering in the conflict, pointing to Moscow’s relentless bombardment of cities and the targeted execution of civilians in areas under its control.
Meanwhile, Russia also claimed to have thwarted an alleged assassination plot against high-ranking officers in the Donetsk People’s Republic. The FSB, Russia’s security service, alleged that Ukrainian intelligence had dispatched a group of operatives to Kill the senior officials, but the plot was thwarted after tips from local residents led to the detainment of the alleged assassins.
Led by oligarch and former Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych, the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics are puppet states propped up by Moscow since 2014, when Russia annexed Crimea following the Ukrainian revolution. Their attempts to secede from Ukraine have been truculently opposed by kyiv and the international community, which views them as illegal occupiers.
Despite these latest accusations, both sides have shown no signs of letting up in their rhetoric or military campaigns. With global attention increasingly focused elsewhere, the conflict in Ukraine grinds on, its resolution nowhere in sight.
