Ukraine Halts Russian Gas Transit via its Territory in National Security Interest
In a significant geopolitical move, Ukraine has ceased the transit of Russian natural gas through its territory, citing national security interests. This decision, announced by the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, comes amidst escalating tensions and has drawn strong reactions from both Russia and neighboring countries.
"We have halted Russian gas transit. It’s a historic event. Russia will suffer financial losses," said Minister of Foreign Affairs, German Galuščenko, in a statement cited by the ministry’s press service.
The gas pipeline, which originates in Russia, traverses Ukraine, and extends into Slovakia, has become a point of contention. Slovakia, despite its intentions to continue receiving Russian gas, has found itself embroiled in the dispute. In response to Ukraine’s decision to halt gas transit on January 1, Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico announced that Slovakia would suspend electricity supply to Ukraine.
The Ukrainian move is part of a broader strategy to reduce its dependence on Russian energy resources and to exert pressure on Moscow amid continued political tensions.
