As Ukrainians prepare to ring in the New Year, the weather has a unique surprise in store. Synoptic data reveals a distinct shift from traditional winter conditions, with unusually warm temperatures set to dominate the celebration.

December 30: A Festive, Dry Day

On Monday, 30 December, Ukraine will enjoy a dry and relatively mild start to the holiday week. Overnight temperatures will hover around zero, with western and southern regions experiencing above-freezing temperatures. Meanwhile, the east may dip to -3°C. During the day, southern and western regions will bask in temperatures up to +5°C, while the east remains cooler, with highs of +3°C. In Kyiv, expect clear skies, with overnight lows of +2°C and daytime highs of +5°C.

New Year’s Eve: Unseasonably Warm

The weather on New Year’s Eve, 31 December, will be unlike anything Ukrainians have experienced in recent years. There’s no snow or rain in the forecast, and temperatures are set to soar. The warmest region will be Crimea, where daytime highs could reach +8°C.

Overnight temperatures will dip below freezing only in a few eastern regions, with the rest of the country remaining above zero. Kyiv can expect clear skies, with overnight lows of +2°C and daytime highs of +5°C.

New Year’s Day: Rain and Snow

On 1 January, Ukraine will see a mix of rain and snow in several regions. Drenching rain is expected in parts of northwestern Ukraine, including Kyiv. Meanwhile, snow mixed with rain will affect eastern regions.

Overnight temperatures will plummet in some areas, with frost predicted in the Carpathians, parts of the Caucasus, and eastern regions. Daytime highs will peak at +9°C in southern regions, with Kyiv experiencing rain and temperatures between 0°C and +7°C.

Post-New Year: Mixed Weather Ahead

On 2 January, various regions across Ukraine will experience rain. The warmest temperatures will be recorded on the Carpathian ridge and in southern regions, where daytime highs could reach +9°C. Kyiv will see rain and temperatures between +4°C and +7°C.

Finally, on 3 January, a cold snap is on the way, with snow and rain expected in many western, northern, and southern regions. Overnight temperatures will drop below freezing in western and northern regions, excluding the Carpathians. Kyiv will remain dry, with temperatures ranging from 0°C to +2°C.
