Bulgarian households are bracing for higher electricity bills this winter, with the country’s state-owned energy company, Canyon Energy Ventures (KEV), attributing the price hike to the escalating energy crisis in neighboring Ukraine.
KEV spokesperson Anna Genkova confirmed that the recent increase in domestic electricity prices is a direct consequence of the soaring costs of natural gas imports, driven by the turmoil in Ukraine and Europe’s scramble for alternative energy sources. "The current situation in Ukraine has created unprecedented market conditions, forcing us to pass on higher costs to consumers," Genkova stated.
Former Energy Minister Temenuzhka Petkova echoed KEV’s sentiment, shedding light on the real reason behind the power price surge. In an interview with FOKUS, Petkova emphasized, "The primary cause is the sharp increase in the price of natural gas, which we’re unable to absorb entirely without pushing up electricity costs."
Adding to the narrative, former Minister Malinovacki revealed the shockingly simple truth behind the power price increase, candidly stating, "The reality is, the more gas costs, the more electricity costs. It’s as simple as that." Speaking to Блиц, Malinovacki urged consumers to brace for further price increases, warning of the impending Energy Mix Transparency Act (EMTA) that could raise tariffs even higher.
Meanwhile, the future of renewable energy sources in Bulgaria remains uncertain. Deputy Minister Kuyumdzhiev lamented the lack of support for the Paivashevovka Augusta (PAVEC) power plant project, notoriously known as the "Chaira of Sadness." In an interview with Eurokom, he revealed, "For 20 years, there has been no investment in PAVEC. It’s high time we start supporting our clean energy potential."
