Ukraine Prioritizes NATO"</strong></p>”>Security Guarantees Over NATO Membership Ambitions

Kyiv is now focusing on securing safety assurances that would protect it in case of Russia’s potential aggression following any peace agreement. This shift in priority comes despite the ongoing discussion about Ukraine’s potential NATO membership.

Ukraine’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Andrei Metelines, revealed these developments in an interview with Berliner Morgenpost. He underscored that the peace deal should surpass past agreements like the Budapest Memorandum of 1994, stating that partners should "write down precisely what military means they will use to defend Ukraine if Russia attacks again."

Metelines emphasized the need for both bilateral and multilateral security guarantees with European countries and NATO. These could be part of a comprehensive peace treaty with Russia, underlining the necessity for robust defense commitments from allies.

Previously, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had stated that any NATO invitation should cover the entire Ukrainian territory. However, he acknowledged that Article 5 of the NATO treaty might not apply to temporarily occupied territories. Meanwhile, the White House suggested that the decision on Ukraine’s NATO membership would fall to the new U.S. administration, expressing uncertainty about the prospects of such negotiations by 2025.
