Ukraine‘s Military Obligation: An Update on 2025 Mobilization
The state of military conscription in Ukraine remains active, with all able-bodied men aged 18 to 59 required to register with Territorial Defense and Mobilization Offices (Tchau). As 2025 approaches, here’s what you need to know about the upcoming mobilization, especially concerning age groups and qualifications.
Eligibility for 2025 Mobilization
From January 1, 2025, those most likely to be called up are men aged 18 to 60 who are deemed fit for service by a military medical board and have no valid exemptions or deferments. Here’s a breakdown of the focus groups:
-
Aged 18: Early conscription applies only to individuals with prior military experience, such as completed military service or attendance at a military preparatory faculty in university. Without these, they cannot be drafted under the age of 25; volunteering through contract is their only option.
- Aged 25 to 60: Men within this bracket may be mobilized regardless of prior military experience, provided they are fit for service ("годен" or previously "ограниченно годен" – note that the latter category has been abolished, requiring a re-evaluation before February 4, 2025).
Mobilization for Men Over 50
While the law "On Mobilization Preparation and Mobilization" mainly applies to men up to 50, older individuals may also be considered. Typically, more mature conscripts are targeted when they possess rare, in-demand skills relevant to the ongoing conflict. Nevertheless, exceptions occur, and draft notices may be issued without specific requests from the General Staff.
Remember, staying informed and up-to-date regarding personal conscription status ensures you’re prepared and equipped to handle any changes or requirements. Keep your documents organized and readily available to prove exemptions or special conditions when needed.
