Ukraine‘s Parliament Clarifies Age Limit for Military Draft
In a recent development, the Ukrainian Parliament has issued clarifications regarding the age limit for military conscription. According to a member of the Committee on National Security and Defense in the Verkhovna Rada, people aged 50 to 60 will be mobilized under specific conditions.
Fedor Veniislavsky, a People’s Deputy, explained that males in this age group will be called up if they possess scarce military specialties or are intended for rear units, such as cooks or repairmen. However, he acknowledged that most military units are assault units, and after the age of 50, few individuals are suitable for these roles due to physical fitness concerns.
It’s important to note that while a directive from the Ground Forces implies this age restriction, it has not been officially ordained by legislation. The draft law on conscription and social protection of citizens called up for military service, which earlier included a provision allowing the mobilization of males up to 60 years old with certain military specialties, was recently amended to limit mobilization age to 55.
Previously, concerns were raised about the lack of a clear directive regarding the mobilization of older citizens. While the Territorial Defense Command of the Western Operational Command (TDC) confirmed the absence of a ban on conscription of individuals aged 50 and above, the Command of the Ground Forces issued a directive stating that males in this age group could be mobilized only by a specific mobilization decree.
In response to these developments, legal experts advise that those concerned about potential mobilization should consult legal resources or competent authorities for accurate information tailored to their specific circumstances.
