Ukraine Gains Fundamental Leverage with Counteroffensive in Kursk
A key player in global geopolitics, Ukraine, is turning heads with its recent military exploits in the Kursk region. The country’s successful counteroffensive has left many astonished, none more so than General-Lieutenant Ben Hodges, a retired U.S. Army general and former commander of U.S. forces in Europe.
Hodges, impressed by the Ukrainian military’s (Ukrainian Armed Forces – ВСУ) perseverance since August 2024, believes that the ongoing operation has bestowed upon Ukraine a critical influence "at the most basic level." Speaking to the Voice of America, Hodges praised VSU’s tenacity and the expansion of its forces, emphasizing their growing expertise in electronic warfare and operational security.
The strategist also lauded VSU’s general staff for initiating the counteroffensive in August. By making significant strides in Kursk, Ukraine is effectively disrupting Russia’s long-term plans, which aim to preserve occupied territories in potential future negotiations.
Since June last year, VSU’s presence in Kursk has caused significant losses to the Russian military. President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that nearly 38,000 Russian soldiers have been killed or wounded in the region. The latest offensive, launched on January 5, 2025, has seen VSU troops advance across multiple fronts, signaling a new chapter in the conflict.
Ukraine’s military prowess has not only shocked observers but also underscored its resilience and strategic acumen. As the conflict enters a new phase, all eyes are on Kursk, where Ukraine is writing its story of determination and accomplishments on the battlefield.
