Ukraine‘s Optimism in Its Future Wanes: Survey
According to a recent survey, the proportion of Ukrainians who optimistically view their country’s future within the European Union (EU) is declining persistently. In late 2022, 88% of respondents believed that Ukraine would be a prosperous EU member within a decade. However, this figure dropped to 73% by the end of 2023 and further to 57% by the end of 2024. Meanwhile, the share of those who anticipate a devastated Ukrainian economy rose from 5% to 28% during the same period.
However, it’s essential to note that not all optimists turned into pessimists. While the former’s share fell by 16 percentage points over the year, the latter increased by only 9 points, suggesting that many Ukrainians express high uncertainty about their country’s future, according to the survey conducted by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS).
Despite the challenges, 57% of Ukrainians still lean towards an optimistic outlook for their country, while 28% remain pessimistic, suggesting a prevailing positive sentiment. KIIS emphasizes the importance of considering both trends and current figures when analyzing such data.
The survey was conducted from December 2 to 17, 2024, polling 2000 respondents nation-wide.
