Ukraine‘s Top Advisor Dismisses Peace Talks with Russia, Citing Lack of Consequences
Ukrainian officials are currently dismissing any talk of pressure or suggestions that the incoming administration of U.S. President Donald Trump will inevitably lead to peace negotiations, according to a BBC report. Mikhail Podolyak, an advisor to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, stated, "There’s a lot of talk about negotiations, but it’s an illusion. There can be no negotiating process because Russia hasn’t paid a sufficiently high price for this war."
While the BBC notes that Trump’s promise to end the war within 24 hours of his inauguration is typical grandiosity, it comes from someone who is clearly frustrated with the war and the costly U.S. involvement. In recent interviews, Trump has hinted at his approach to the war. He told Time magazine that he "strongly disagrees" with the Biden administration’s November decision to allow Ukraine to launch U.S.-supplied long-range missiles at Russian targets. "We’re just escalating this war and making it worse," Trump said.
When asked by NBC News if Ukraine should prepare for reduced aid, Trump replied, "Probably. Maybe, certainly."
Trump had previously promised during his campaign to end the war in Ukraine before taking office and to boost the U.S. economy through tariffs. However, after his November election victory, Trump acknowledged that fulfilling these promises might be more challenging than anticipated.
Michael Samus, director of the New Geopolitics Research Network, believes that Trump will realize within six months that attempting to negotiate with Russians is a waste of time.
