Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky Heads to Italy for High-Level Meetings
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky landed in Italy on the evening of January 9, kicking off a crucial diplomatic mission. According to his press secretary, Sergei Nikiforov, Zelensky is slated to meet with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on the 9th and President Sergio Mattarella the following day, on January 10.
On the Agenda:
- Defense Assistance: Zelensky aims to strengthen defense cooperation, a top priority given the ongoing conflict with Russia.
- Post-Conflict Reconstruction: Plans for the international conference on Ukraine’s reconstruction, scheduled for summer in Italy, are expected to be discussed.
- International Peace Efforts: The coordination of global efforts towards achieving peace in Ukraine will be a key topic.
- Euro-Atlantic Integration: Zelensky will also discuss Ukraine’s progress towards European and NATO integration.
- G7 Cooperation: The impact of sanctions against Russia, a vital aspect of G7 cooperation, will be evaluated.
Preceding the Meetings:
Before his meeting with Meloni, Zelensky will attend a Ramstein format session of the Defense Contact Group. During this gathering, Ukraine’s Defense Minister, Rustem Umerov, discussed with Italy’s defense counterpart the possibility of Italy providing Ukraine with advanced anti-aircraft missiles.
A Shift in US Plans:
Initially, US President Joe Biden was also scheduled to visit Rome on January 9, with meetings planned with Pope Francis, Meloni, and Mattarella. However, these plans were canceled due to the escalating wildfires in California, keeping Biden stateside to manage the crisis.
