Russian oligarch Umar Kremlev funded hundreds of thousands of dollars in expenses for celebrations surrounding the May wedding of Donald Trump Jr. and Bettina Anderson in the Bahamas, according to records and interviews reviewed by ProPublica. The lavish three-day event took place across two ultra-exclusive private islands, featuring helicopters, seaplanes, and a five-tier funfetti cake airlifted from Florida.
Kremlev, who is close to Russian President Vladimir Putin, paid to rent one of the private islands used for guest accommodations and a reception. He also funded a fireworks display launched from a barge over the sea on the final night of the festivities. According to ProPublica, these payments were processed through an entity in Dubai affiliated with the International Boxing Association (IBA), which the organization utilizes for financial transactions.
Responses from the Trump Family
Bettina Trump confirmed the funding in an Instagram post, describing Kremlev as a dear friend
who very generously hosted two incredible nights of celebrations for us AFTER our wedding
. She characterized the funding as an extraordinarily generous wedding gift from a friend
and asserted that the couple married privately on May 22 surrounded ONLY by our family
. She further explained that the weekend festivities had been planned in advance as a trip with friends and were not originally intended to be the wedding weekend.
President Donald Trump issued a statement saying that Kremlev paid for an afterparty
and that it is Not a big deal!
The president stated he does not know Kremlev, saying, I have no idea who Umar is, never heard of him, and he didn’t pay for Don and Bettina’s wedding, which took place at a totally different location, and on a different day from the wedding
. He added that he was not present for the party.

A spokesperson for Donald Trump Jr. stated that the two men met a couple of years ago through a mutual friend in the hunting world and bonded over shared interests in boxing and the outdoors. The spokesperson emphasized that Kremlev is a businessman and philanthropist
who has never discussed political matters
with American acquaintances, including Trump Jr., and that there is no business relationship between them. Conversely, a spokesperson for Eric Trump told ProPublica that he did not know Kremlev and had never heard of him.
Profile of Umar Kremlev
Umar Kremlev serves as the president of the International Boxing Association, a Switzerland-based league financed by the Russian state energy giant Gazprom. His ties to the Russian government are extensive; he recently accompanied President Putin on a delegation to China and was awarded the Order of Friendship, a Russian state honor, in April.

Due to his closeness to Putin and Russian security services, the Ukrainian government has imposed personal sanctions on Kremlev. Ukrainian sanctions specifically describe him as a close friend of the head of Putin’s security service
, according to The Washington Post.
Security and Political Concerns
The presence of Kremlev and a larger group of Russian guests—who reportedly stood apart and spoke Russian among themselves—puzzled other attendees of the intimate gathering of roughly 50 people. The guest list included Eric Trump and Jared Kushner.
The financial arrangement has drawn criticism from national security experts and lawmakers. Frank Montoya Jr., a retired career FBI official, stated that such funding is unthinkable for the son of the president
, noting that oligarchs often coordinate with the Russian government.
Rep. Robert Garcia (D-Calif.), the ranking member of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, called for answers regarding the funding. Umar Kremlev spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on the President’s son. What did he get in return?
Garcia wrote on social media.
