The Sliven Multi-Profile Hospital in Bulgaria has become the center of a storm after a video of its staff dancing with newborn babies surfaced online. The clip, set to upbeat ‘chalga’ music, shows midwives handling the infants with apparent disregard for their safety, sparking outrage and prompting an investigation into the incident.

Dr. Vasil Stefanov, the hospital’s director, confirmed the authenticity of the video but stated that the identities of the babies involved have yet to be confirmed. "At this point, we cannot say for certain whose babies were involved, as the medical assistant who shot the video hasn’t been able to identify which child she was holding when the footage was taken," he told BNT on Monday.

One of the dancing midwives, Ralitsa Nedkova, has since submitted her resignation. However, the hospital’s troubles are far from over. The Bulgarian Ministry of Health has ordered an inspection, which commenced today, to determine if the actions of the staff posed a risk to the babies’ lives and health. The local prosecutor’s office is also reviewing the matter after receiving numerous media complaints.

The investigation will focus on whether the midwives intentionally put the babies’ safety at risk. An internal probe into the incident is already underway in the hospital’s maternity department. So far, preliminary reports indicate that there were 16 babies in the department at the time the video was shot, eight of whom were in the physiological sector where the footage was recorded.

This unprecedented incident has raised serious questions about hospital protocol and the care provided to newborns. As the investigation unfolds, the Sliven Multi-Profile Hospital is under intense scrutiny, and its reputation is on the line. The public awaits the findings of the inspections and the hospital’s response to this alarming lapse in professional conduct.
