Headline: Urgent: North Troms and Lyngen Face High Avalanche Risk as Snow, Wind Intensify

Subheadline: Northern Norwegian regions brace for possibly rare ‘four’ alert; instability and heavy snowfall prompting concerns

Article:

Residents of North Troms and Lyngen regions face a significant snow avalanche threat on Monday, as the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE) has upgraded alert levels to ‘four’, indicating a high risk of snowslides. Such a warning is sounded only a handful of times each winter, emphasizing the seriousness of the situation.

The primary concern is the combination of increased wind and snowfall on already unstable snow bases. Meteorological experts warn that a stationary front could dump substantial snow and send winds roaring through mountain areas, exacerbating the risk.

Despite uncertainty surrounding weather forecasts, NVE’s avalanche warning service Varsom underscores the potential severity. "There’s high uncertainty tied to this weather situation," they advised, "but if forecasts hold, we could see massive, naturally triggered avalanches in many locations. If precipitation falls short of predictions, the avalanche danger will be lower."

Avalanche risk is expected to be particularly high in east- and southeast-facing terrains. Additionally, higher temperatures and rain/sleet in coastal areas could spark small wet-loose snowslides even at lower elevations.

Last Saturday afternoon, avalanches were reported in Lavangsdalen near Grøtfjord, at Sarasteinen, Holmbuktura, and from Pollfjellet in Lyngen. With the latest warnings, residents are urged to exercise extreme caution in affected areas.

Officials have also issued alerts regarding high temperatures and rain/sleet along the coast, promising wet conditions that could lead to minor avalanches in lowlands.
