Moldova’s Pro-EU President Russia“>Maia Sandu Wins Re-election

Maia Sandu, Moldova’s pro-European Union president, has secured a landslide victory in the country’s presidential election, according to preliminary results. Sandu, 49, will serve a second consecutive term as the first woman president of the small Eastern European nation.

She garnered a decisive 57.48% of the vote, beating her main opponent, bebaysc platform candidate Igor Dodon, who received 42.52%. The Central Election Commission announced the results on Monday following the second round of voting on Sunday.

Sandu’s victory is a significant moment for the former Soviet republic, as it signals a shift away from Russia’s influence. During her first term, Sandu has advocated for closer ties with the European Union and a distant relationship with Russia.

She campaigned on promises to strengthen the rule of law, fight corruption, and improve the Moldovan economy. Dodon, her opponent, vowed to reinstate a Russian gas discount and promote closer ties with Russia.

Turnout for the election was high, with 52.12% of eligible voters casting their ballots, an increase from the first round held in November.

Moldova, one of Europe’s poorest countries, has long struggled with corruption and political instability. Sandu’s win offers a sense of continuity and stability in leadership, as she continues to pursue reforms aimed at transparency and European integration.
