Boosting Immunity: Advances in Asthma Research Following Wellcome Discovery Award
The Wellcome Discovery Award is set to unlock new doors in asthma research, focusing on the unique proteins of parasitic worms. The follow-up research will delve into how different members of this ‘family’ of proteins function and explore ways to influence their activity, paving the way for tailored treatments.
Led by Dr. Rick Maizels, the collaborative effort also includes Professor Hermelijn Smits from the Leiden University Medical Center and Dr. Henry McSorley. Together, they aim to understand these proteins’ role in the human immune system and how their findings could help manage conditions like asthma.
"By understanding these worm proteins better, we can potentially unravel how human immunity works," said Dr. Maizels. "This could be a game-changer in not just treating, but possibly preventing asthma in children."
