Both phenomena are part of an extensive cold wave that will affect most of the country from Sunday, January 5 to Saturday, January 11, 2025.

According to the Comisión Nacional del Agua (Conagua), this meteorological system will bring:

  • Increased rainfall probability in the east and southeast of the country on January 6 and 7.
  • A strong "Norte" event with wind gusts of 70 to 90 km/h along the coasts of Tamaulipas, Veracruz, the Isthmus, and the Gulf of Tehuantepec.
  • Sharp temperature drops in northeastern, northeastern, and eastern states.
  • Possible rainfall, snow, sleet, or freezing rain in Baja California, Sonora, Chihuahua, Durango, Sinaloa (northeast), Zacatecas, Coahuila, and Nuevo León.

To cope with these conditions, the agency recommends the following preventive measures:

  • Dress appropriately in multiple layers of clothing.
  • Avoid abrupt temperature changes.
  • Check and secure doors, windows, and roofs to minimize cold air currents.
  • Use heaters safely, ensuring proper ventilation to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.
  • Avoid going out unless necessary.
  • Drive carefully on icy or snowy roads.
  • Help the elderly, children, and vulnerable groups stay warm.
  • Keep pets in protected areas.

Front No. 20 is expected to remain stationary over the western Caribbean Sea, causing:

  • Very heavy rain in Veracruz, Oaxaca, Chiapas, and Tabasco.
  • Heavy rain in Tamaulipas, San Luis Potosí, and Puebla.
  • Intervals of showers in Querétaro, Hidalgo, Campeche, Yucatán, and Quintana Roo.
  • Isolated showers in Coahuila and Nuevo León.

The system will also bring winds of 70 to 90 km/h in the Isthmus and Gulf of Tehuantepec, with the front expected to move over Cuba and cease affecting Mexico in the early morning hours of Saturday, January 4.

Meanwhile, moisture from the Pacific Ocean will generate isolated showers with possible lightning in Jalisco, Michoacán, Guerrero, Estado de México, and Ciudad de México. States on the Pacific coast (from Sonora to Guerrero) will experience a warm to hot daytime environment. Finally, a high-pressure system will cause elevated waves of 1 to 3 meters high along the western coast of Baja California.

For January 4, temperatures will gradually increase during the day, but mornings and nights will remain cold to very cold, with frost in affected regions. Additionally, there will be banks of fog during the early hours in the Sierra Madre Oriental and the Valley of Mexico.

Minimum temperatures for January 4 are expected to be -15 to -10°C with frost in mountainous areas of Durango; -10 to -5°C with frost in mountainous areas of Chihuahua; -5 to 0°C with frost in zones of Baja California, Sonora, San Luis Potosí (west), Zacatecas, Aguascalientes, Jalisco, Michoacán, Guanajuato, Hidalgo, Estado de México, Morelos, Tlaxcala, and Puebla; and 0 to 5°C in Sinaloa, Nayarit, Coahuila, Nuevo León, Querétaro, Ciudad de México, Veracruz, and Oaxaca.
