Czech tennis player Sára Bejlek advanced to the semifinals of the tournament in Cincinnati after defeating last year’s Australian Open winner Madison Keys of the United States 3:6, 6:4, 7:6. Bejlek secured the victory in two hours and 37 minutes, converting her first match point in the deciding tie-break.
Path to the Cincinnati Semifinals
The 20-year-old Czech player staged a comeback after dropping the first set and trailing 1:3 in the second against Keys. In the third set, Bejlek squandered a 4:1 lead before prevailing 7:5 in the tie-break.
“From the beginning, I was quite nervous,” Bejlek said. “I still hoped that it would break, that the match could turn around at any time, and that my opponent would give me some chance, because she played brilliantly from the beginning. Still I believed that it would break and turn to my side.”
This run follows Bejlek’s round-of-sixteen triumph over world number one Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus. Earlier in the tournament, Bejlek defeated Ekaterina Alexandrova of Russia as well as compatriots Barbora Krejčíková and Karolína Plíšková.
Live Rankings and Season Performance
Reaching the WTA 1000 semifinal marks a first for Bejlek, pushing her to 29th in the live rankings. This builds on a strong season that includes a WTA 500 title victory in Abu Dhabi in February.

“Abu Dhabi gave me a lot of confidence, and that’s showing here too,” Bejlek noted regarding her ongoing success.
Upcoming Semifinal Match Against Coco Gauff
In the battle for a spot in the final, the 163-centimeter-tall Bejlek will face American Coco Gauff, who defeated Marta Kostyuk of Ukraine 6:2, 6:2. This will be the first meeting between Bejlek and the winner of last year’s Roland Garros and US Open 2023.
“I’m curious about it myself,” Bejlek said. “I’m terribly looking forward to the match. I will try to deliver the best possible performance again. Physically, I feel great on the court. Nothing is bothering me health-wise and I’m glad for that. I think that I and the rest of the team are doing an excellent job now.”
