In a whirlwind of celebration, New Year’s Eve in the Netherlands turned into a veritable inferno for emergency services, battling a surge in vuurwerk-related injuries that saw traumatized victims flooding hospitals across the country.

Eleven people injured in Limburg alone as the clocks struck midnight, reported L1 Nieuws. In total, at least twelve people sustained injuries due to careless use of fireworks, with many sustaining severe burns and loss of eyesight, a harrowing reminder of the perils of recreational fireworks.

"Dat oog ben je kwijt" (You’ve lost that eye) – a stark warning from paramedics attending to countless victims. The University Medical Center (UMC) inWilhelmina saw an overwhelming influx of patients, with doctors struggling to meet the massive demand for care.

"It’s humanitarian, really," said a traumatized surgeon from MST (Martini Hospital), relaying the emotional toll on medical personnel dealing with the aftermath of cheerful, yet thoughtless, fireworks use.

The situation was exacerbated by the unexpected cancellation of many public vuurwerk displays due to extreme weather conditions, leading unsuspecting revelers to create their own spectacles at home, with disastrous consequences.

The Eyskens Hospital in Zeist witnessed a grim tally of injured hands, faces, and eyes, while Rijnstate Hospital in Arnhem recorded a worrying number of young children among the casualties, highlighting the lack of safety awareness among parents and guardians.

Amid the chaos, nici van der Horst, a trauma surgeon at UMCG, urged the public to take proper precautions when handling fireworks: "Follow the instructions, keep a safe distance, and never relight a ‘dud.’ Our hospitals are already overwhelmed."

As the fireworks fizzled out and the hangovers set in, the scale of the New Year’s Eve carnage became clear. With calls for stricter regulations and increased public education echoing, one thing is certain: next year’s party will have to wait for far wiser heads.
