President Biden Declares National Day of Mourning, Closes Federal Government in Honor of Former President Jimmy Carter

President Joseph R. Biden Jr. has declared Thursday, January 9, 2025, as a National Day of Mourning in remembrance of the life and legacy of James Earl Carter Jr., the 39th President of the United States. In observance of this day, President Biden has issued an executive order closing all executive departments and agencies of the federal government.

USCIS Offices to Close, Appointments Rescheduled

Due to the closure, all U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) offices will be closed on January 9, 2025. All naturalization ceremonies, interviews, and scheduled appointments for that day will be rescheduled, and affected individuals will be promptly notified.

Scheduling adjustments include:

  • Rescheduling naturalization ceremonies, interviews, and appointments for January 9.
  • Issuing new appointment notices for biometric services within three weeks for those affected.
