A Bishan resident visiting the newly opened River Crab playground at Lorong 7 Toa Payoh discovered a used condom placed near a children’s slide, according to a report submitted to Stomp on Sept 13. The resident, identified as a member of the Stomp Team, found the discarded items on a bench facing the play equipment while supervising her children at approximately 11:20 am.
Playground Hygiene Concerns at Toa Payoh Facility
The discovery involved a bright blue Durex wrapper, a used tissue, and a used condom resting on top of a discarded shoe insole near Block 233 Lorong 8 Toa Payoh. According to the Stomp contributor, her husband spotted the blue packaging first because it was “quite hard to miss” while walking around the playground area.
The resident stated that several young children were running around the vicinity. She described feeling “grossed out” by the proximity of the items to the slide and noted that she had to physically stop her young son from sitting on the bench to rest. “Who knows what went on at that bench!” she said, adding concerns about children potentially touching the items out of curiosity.
Community Response and Municipal Reporting
The River Crab playground opened in April 2025, according to the Housing Development Board website. The facility was designed and built in partnership with the local community to serve families in the estate.
Following the discovery, the resident submitted an official report through the OneService mobile application at 12:15 pm to request municipal cleaning. “I’m not ignorant of the fact that people do stuff at playgrounds at night, but can they at least throw their rubbish into the bin afterwards?” she told Stomp.
