Bulgaria‘s Political Landscape: Coalition Talks Stalled; New Elections Likely
Despite ongoing negotiations, Bulgaria’s first mandate cabinet under Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov may not materialize, with talks reportedly stalling over key posts and infighting among coalition partners. Political analyst Christian Skvorek and journalist Veselin Stoinev discussed this impasse on "Zdravey, Bulgaria."
Stoinev suggested, "We’re edging closer to new elections. A minority government is a possibility, with the option of a quad-coalition seeming to slip away." Heдамяш [:5:-1] cited disagreements over the shape of government and personnel issues, with the Chief Prosecutor’s position proving to be a major sticking point. Stoinev also raised the possibility of Borislav Sarakov dropping out of the race, paving the way for one of his deputies to assume the top prosecutor role.
Skvorek expressed skepticism, arguing that GERB is fixated on forming a cabinet with "Democratic Bulgaria." He mused, "Bulgaria could be different – less corrupt, ruled by law – if suddenly, magically, Bulgarians transformed into Swedes or Germans overnight."
Both experts agreed that fresh elections would likely yield the same result as the last, with GERB and PP-DB as the main losers. With coalition talks at an impasse and no clear path forward, Bulgarians may indeed be headed to the polls again.
