Title: Venezuelan Military‘s Padrino López Stands by Maduro, Dismisses Opposition‘s Attempts to Invalidate His Presidency
The Venezuelan military’s top brass, Major General Vladimir Padrino López, has once again thrown hisWeight behind Nicolás Maduro, dismissing opposition’s attempts to nullify his presidency following the controversial elections of July 28, 2022. Despite the absence of credible evidence supporting Maduro’s victory, Padrino López insisted that the military stood firmly behind the embattled president.
In a press statement, Padrino López lambasted Edmundo González Urrutia, the opposition candidate in the 2013 presidential elections, after the latter alleged that the military was not committed to Venezuela’s democracy. Padrino retorted, "The FANB [Bolivarian National Armed Force] is an institution bound to the Republic of Venezuela and the homeland. It does not yield to mandates or orders from imperial powers."
Padrino dismissed González’s remarks as "ridiculous, incomprehensible, and laughable," warning the opposition that they were treading on thin ice. "This man is trying to juramentarse [be sworn in] here, but let me tell you, he won’t succeed. We have prepared a response from the FANB, and we won’t let him."
The Venezuelan military has been a stalwart supporter of Maduro, despite the country’s economic crisis and international criticism of the president’s legitimacy. However, a growing number of military personnel, both active and retired, have voiced their discontent with the government in recent months, calling for dialogue and change.
As the political tension in Venezuela continues to escalate, the military’s role remains crucial in maintaining stability and resolving the power struggle between Maduro and the opposition. With Padrino López’s recent remarks, it’s clear that the military leadership has no plans to deviate from its backing of Maduro’s presidency.
