First known time a tiger gives birth to 5 cubs in China

Not all of us want to run into five tiger siblings in the wild.

But this particular sighting could be a very good thing.

Late last year, a camera filmed a tiger family with five cubs walking through Northeast China Tiger and Leopard National Park, near the Chinese-Russian border.

It’s the first time a tiger is known to have given birth to that many cubs in the wild in China.

Usually, tigers give birth to one to four cubs at once, said Rinjan Shrestha, the lead specialist on Asian big cats for the World Wildlife Fund.

Tigers are endangered. There are only about 70 of them living in the wild in China.

So a litter of five cubs is “exceptional,” Shrestha said.
