According to planetary scientist Ryleigh Davis, lead author of the study published in Science Advances, these magnesium-rich minerals indicate a violent celestial collision billions of years ago that was triggered by the capture of Triton, Neptune’s largest moon.
How Triton Captured Neptune’s Moons and Altered Planetary Architecture
Triton previously resided farther out in the solar system within the Kuiper Belt before Neptune’s gravitational pull captured it during the early migration of the gas giants. According to researchers at the University of California, San Diego, and Caltech, Triton’s incoming gravitational forces disrupted Neptune’s original satellite system. This interaction caused most of the planet’s original moons to collide, leaving behind debris that eventually re-formed into Neptune’s current inner moons, which include Proteus, Larissa, and Galatea.
The discovery offers a rare look into planetary interiors normally hidden beneath thick ice shells. “Neptune’s inner moons may be the only place in the solar system where we can directly observe that material, because this catastrophic event essentially turned those ancient worlds inside out,” Davis said. While Jupiter, Saturn, and Uranus retained orderly systems of regular satellites, Neptune’s gravitational capture of Triton left it with an irregular architecture where a single interloper accounts for more than 99% of the system’s mass.

According to researchers, Nereid’s composition suggests it somehow survived the chaotic era that destroyed Neptune’s original moon family.
