WhatsApp users can now reserve custom usernames ahead of the feature’s official launch later this year. According to a company announcement, the ability to secure a unique handle is rolling out this week, allowing users to claim their preferred identity before the feature becomes available to WhatsApp’s 3 billion global users.
How do you reserve a WhatsApp username?
Reserving a handle is an optional process that requires the latest version of the WhatsApp application. To check for availability, users should navigate to Settings, select Account, and then tap Username.

WhatsApp confirmed that the reservation option is rolling out incrementally throughout the week. If the option does not appear immediately on Android or iOS devices, users should ensure their app is updated to the most recent build available in their respective app stores.
Why is WhatsApp launching username reservations now?
The company is initiating the “land grabbing” phase early to manage the high probability of username overlap. With billions of active accounts, finding a unique, simple handle will become difficult once the feature is fully live.
By allowing users to reserve names now, WhatsApp aims to distribute the selection process. This prevents the technical and user-experience friction that would occur if hundreds of millions of people attempted to claim the same popular usernames simultaneously during the official launch.
While usernames will eventually allow for easier contact, WhatsApp maintains that a valid phone number is still mandatory for the initial account registration process. The username functions as an additional way to be found, rather than a total replacement for a mobile number during setup.
What changes for users when usernames go live?
The introduction of usernames marks a shift in how users interact and share contact information on the platform. Currently, sharing a WhatsApp identity requires sharing a direct phone number. Once the full feature launches, users will have two distinct methods for connecting with new contacts:
- Phone Number: The traditional method of sharing a mobile digit sequence.
- Username: A unique alphanumeric handle that can be shared via social media or other messaging apps.
This transition mirrors the identity models used by platforms like Instagram and Facebook, where a handle serves as the primary public-facing identifier. For many users, this provides a way to communicate without disclosing their private phone number to every new contact.
