When and where to watch Victoria Day Parade in Victoria, BC

by Rachel Morgan News Editor

The 126th edition of the Thrifty Foods Victoria Day Parade is set to make history on Monday, marking the largest number of participants in the event’s history despite a significant reduction in the length of its route.

Record Participation Amidst Route Changes

Starting at 9 a.m. On Monday, just over 4,000 people will march, dance, and drive from the B.C. Legislature in Victoria to Chatham Street. This figure represents a notable increase from the approximately 3,800 participants who took part in last year’s milestone 125th parade.

However, while individual participation is at an all-time high, the number of overall entries—including bands, dance groups, and floats—has seen a slight decline. We find 88 entries signed up for this year’s event, compared to nearly 100 last year.

Prioritizing Public Safety

The most significant shift for the 2026 event is the transition to a new, shorter route. The previous four-kilometre path along Douglas Street has been replaced by a 1.6-km downtown circuit. The parade will proceed along Government Street to Wharf Street, move to Johnson Street, return to Government Street, and conclude at Chatham Street.

According to organizers, this change was implemented for safety reasons. The decision stems from concerns following a tragedy at last year’s Lapu Lapu festival in Vancouver, where 11 people were killed after a vehicle was driven into a crowd.

Community Highlights and Honorary Guests

The parade will be led by honorary marshal Bob Barlow. The 90-year-old former NHL player, who appeared in 77 games, holds the record for the fastest first goal in league history, scoring just six seconds into his first shift. Barlow will lead the procession in a convertible Mustang.

Kelly Kurta of the Greater Victoria Festival Society noted that the event is serving as a sanctuary for groups from other cancelled local events. This includes a Special Olympics Torch Run entry originally planned for the now-cancelled Oak Bay Tea Party Parade. Supporting these athletes will be the Oak Bay police and fire departments from Colwood, View Royal, Oak Bay, Saanich, and Victoria.

Other featured participants include:

  • The B.C. Aviation Museum
  • The Legendary Sikh Riders motorcycle team
  • A “stunning” float from the Penticton Peach Festival
  • Various cultural groups

Pre-Parade Festivities

Public celebrations begin today with the Parade of Bands and Epic Drum Battle at the legislature, running from 11 a.m. To 4 p.m. The showcase features the University of Washington Husky Drumline, the Victoria Morris Dancers, the Stages Dance Company, and several marching bands scheduled for Monday’s main event.

Analysis: Implications and Future Outlook

The decision to drastically shorten the route while accommodating record participant numbers suggests a shifting priority toward crowd control and vehicle mitigation in urban celebrations. By adopting the route used for last year’s Santa Claus Parade, organizers are prioritizing a contained environment over the traditional long-stretch layout.

Looking ahead, the success of this condensed format could influence how other local festivals manage public safety. If the 1.6-km route proves effective in managing the increased crowd of 4,000 participants, it may serve as a blueprint for future city events. As the parade continues to absorb entries from cancelled local events, it is likely to become an even more centralized hub for regional community displays.
