Toronto’s Growing Pack: How Dog-Friendly Wellness is Redefining City Life
Toronto is experiencing a surge in dog-friendly wellness initiatives, driven by a desire to integrate canine companions into all aspects of daily life. From specialized pack walks and dog-inclusive workouts to calls for more accessible city infrastructure, a movement is underway to produce wellness a shared experience for both humans and their four-legged friends.
The Rise of ‘More Life With Our Dogs’
Kareen Awadalla, founder of Mutts & Butts, is at the forefront of this trend. Inspired by the challenges of balancing fitness with the needs of her foster dog, Bruno, Awadalla launched Mutts & Butts to create spaces where owners and dogs can thrive together. “I think being able to have them with you when you want them there shouldn’t be a barrier,” Awadalla said.
The concept began with pack walks, offering a social and active outlet for dogs and their owners. These walks address a common issue: dogs often spend a significant amount of time sniffing during solo walks, potentially slowing down the owner’s pace. Pack walks provide a community setting where this natural behavior is embraced and shared.
Beyond Patios: Expanding Dog-Friendly Spaces
Awadalla’s vision extends beyond simply allowing dogs on patios. A pivotal moment came when she discovered a local physiotherapy clinic welcomed canine companions. This realization sparked the idea that dog-friendly wellness could exist in unexpected places. “It’s just inside that we’re always so reluctant to inquire,” Awadalla noted.

Mutts & Butts now hosts events and activations at locations like STACKT Market, offering fenced-off play areas and even dog-friendly gym sessions with trainers. This expansion reflects a growing demand for opportunities to “do more life with [our] dogs.”
A Holistic Approach to Canine Wellness
The movement isn’t limited to exercise. Awadalla has fostered a network of professionals dedicated to canine health, including treat companies, raw food specialists, and even dog massage therapists. This holistic approach aims to empower owners to make informed decisions about their dogs’ well-being.
“We don’t have them for remarkably long. We’re lucky if we get them for like 10 to 15 years. I’m just trying to do everything I can to make sure his life is as long and healthy as possible,” Awadalla explained.
The Future of Dog-Friendly Cities
Awadalla envisions a city with infrastructure designed to accommodate both humans and their canine companions. She points to the Dome at Lamport Stadium as a successful example of an all-season dog-friendly space and advocates for similar facilities in other areas. She also suggests simple additions like water bowls throughout the city during warmer months.
Awadalla also believes dog parks could be improved by incorporating elements for human exercise, such as callisthenics equipment. This would allow owners and dogs to work out simultaneously, fostering a stronger bond and promoting a more active lifestyle.
Community and Inclusivity
Mutts & Butts actively promotes inclusivity, encouraging even reactive or vocal dogs to participate in events. Awadalla emphasizes that a little barking is perfectly acceptable and that the benefits of socialization and shared activity outweigh any minor disruptions. “My dog is crazy and barks sometimes, but that’s kind of the point,” she said.
