National Bank Clarifies: No Order to Block Cards or Accounts for Frequent Cash Withdrawals
The National Bank of Ukraine (bank.gov.ua/en/” title=”National Bank of Ukraine”>NBU) has clarified that it has not issued any orders compelling banks to block clients’ bank cards or accounts due to frequent cash withdrawals. The bank took to its official Facebook page to dispel misinformation spread by certain media outlets and Telegram channels.
According to the NBU, some reports claimed that Ukrainian citizens might face blocked bank accounts if they withdraw cash more than three times a month, especially in large amounts, or if they frequently use cash loans. The NBU asserted that these claims are false.
"Please note that this information is completely untrue!" the NBU stated.
The NBU clarified that while it has issued recommendations for strengthening financial monitoring, none of these recommend blocking accounts for frequent cash withdrawals. Banks and financial institutions continue to operate and evaluate their clients exclusively within the framework of existing legislation, employing a risk-based approach.
The NBU emphasized the importance of relying on accurate information from official sources and not indiscriminately spreading false news.
In an unrelated development, from December 23 to 27, the NBU sold a record $1.625 billion to stabilize the national currency on the interbank market and prevent any potential downturn.
