The incident, which occurred in November 2025, resulted in a late-night blaze and caused property damage.
How the Accidental Sauna Activation Sparked a Late-Night Fire
The sequence of events began when the resident, a Brazilian national living in the Schwyz municipality, entered a room in her apartment. According to the public prosecutor’s office, the room housed a sauna, which was not used for making sauna, but served as a débarras for clothing and other easily flammable objects.
The resident wanted to search for a pair of tights and had turned on the light for that. However, several handbags masked the view on the switches. When the woman moved her handbags and stretched to reach the light switch, she accidentally put the sauna into operation without realizing it.
Hours passed before the consequences manifested. Late in the evening, a fire broke out in the room. According to the parquet, the fire spread throughout the room and the smoke spread up to the third floor of the building, located just below.

At that time, the woman, her daughter and another person were in the apartment. The fire department quickly brought the fire under control. Material damage of an unknown amount was nevertheless noted.

She was sentenced to a suspended fine of 3 400 francs, with a probationary period of two years.
