A 24-year-old woman, identified as Deepika, allegedly died by suicide after jumping from the terrace of her in-laws’ residence in Greater Noida on Sunday, according to police reports.
Following a complaint filed by the woman’s family, police have arrested her husband, Ritik, and her father-in-law. The incident has drawn significant attention, with scores of people gathering at the home of Deepika’s parents in Jalpura, Greater Noida, on Monday to offer support.
Allegations of Dowry Harassment
The family of the deceased alleges that Deepika was subjected to persistent harassment by her in-laws over dowry demands. According to her elder sister, Sarika, 28, the family spent over Rs 1 crore on the wedding in December 2024. The gifts provided included a Mahindra Scorpio N SUV, cash, over 20 tolas of gold, furniture, and 14 earrings distributed among Ritik’s relatives.
Despite these expenditures, Sarika claims the mother-in-law continued to taunt the family and boast about the amount spent. The sister further alleged that before Karva Chauth in October of last year, the in-laws began demanding additional “gifts.”
Physical and Emotional Strain
Beyond financial demands, the family describes a household environment of extreme pressure. Sarika stated that Deepika had grown weak following two abortions resulting from medical complications and suffered from hurting feet. Despite this, she alleged that her mother-in-law forced Deepika to manage all household chores alone.

On the day of the incident, Sarika spoke with her sister twice. In the morning, Deepika mentioned being scolded by her mother-in-law. During a second call around 11 p.m. On Sunday, Deepika reportedly told her sister that she was tired and wanted to rest.
The family was notified of the incident by the in-laws around 1 a.m. On Monday, shortly after Deepika’s father had returned home from visiting a relative.
Legal Action and Police Investigation
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central Noida) Shailendra Kumar Singh confirmed that an FIR was registered at the Ecotech-3 police station. The charges include:
- Section 85 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita: Relating to a husband or relative of a husband subjecting a woman to cruelty.
- Section 80(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita: Relating to dowry death.
- Sections 3 and 4 of the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961.
The body has been sent for a post-mortem examination, and police officials stated that the viscera has been preserved for chemical analysis.
Significance and Next Steps
This case highlights a stark contrast between the perceived security of a “grand” wedding and the reality of ongoing dowry-related harassment. The details provided by the family suggest that substantial financial contributions did not prevent further demands or the alleged mistreatment of the deceased.
Moving forward, the results of the chemical analysis of the viscera may provide further clarity on the circumstances of the death. Further investigations and legal proceedings are likely to continue as police work to build the case against the arrested husband and father-in-law.
