Breaking News: Unexploded WWII Bomb Discovered During Construction in Dresden; Thousands Evacuated
A significant find during bridge repair work in Dresden has led to a major evacuation. A 250kg bomb from World War II has been uncovered, prompting authorities to clear the area around the Carolabrug. Approximately 10,000 residents, workers, and tourists have been asked to leave the affected zone, which spans around a kilometer and includes 14 schools, 9 kindergarten facilities, and multiple care homes.
The unearthed bomb lies near the Carolabrug, which partially collapsed in September last year, resulting in no fatalities. The bridge, constructed in the 1970s, connects the northern part of the city to its center. The ordnance was discovered while dredging operations were underway on Tuesday morning.
Authorities have evacuated a relatively large area as the bomb is lying freely, which could amplify its impact if it were to detonate. Dresden suffered extensive damage and loss of life towards the end of World War II, with a series of allied bombing raids in February 1945 resulting in around 25,000 deaths and the destruction of the city’s historic center.
