Artist Yos Suprapto Retrieves Paintings After GNI Exhibition Controversy
Jakarta – After sparking controversy, renowned artist Yos Suprapto has decided to retrieve his paintings from the Galeri Nasional Indonesia (GNI). This decision was mutually agreed upon by Yos, former curator Suwarno Wisetrotomo, and representatives from GNI.
At precisely 6:00 PM WIB, Yos, accompanied by GNI staff, re-entered the exhibition area in Gedung A of the Galeri Nasional Indonesia in the Gambir area of Central Jakarta. Speaking to the press, Yos explained the situation, "We, as the artist, GNI, and the former curator, couldn’t find common ground. We didn’t reach a consensus on the exhibition’s narrative and overall understanding, so we’ve decided to discontinue it."
A total of 37 large paintings and several smaller pieces were retrieved. Yos also revealed that three of his paintings have already been sold. "Three paintings have been sold, and the rest will be exhibited elsewhere. The purpose of these paintings is to raise awareness about food sovereignty in Indonesia," Yos stated.
When asked about the prices of the sold paintings and his plans for future exhibitions, Yos declined to comment. However, he did assure that there are plans in the works for future exhibitions.
When questioned if he anticipates further resistance in the future, Yos simply replied, "There’s no need for that. We’ve already reached an agreement."
When pressed further about any potential rights violations, Yos again declined to comment, stating, "That’s a separate issue, and we’ve already reached a mutually agreeable solution with GNI."
In closing, when asked if retrieving his paintings was an expression of his disappointment, Yos simply responded, "I’m not sure."
