Young Voters Want Center-Right Majority in Karlshamn

“Unga i Karlshamn har skickat en klar och tydlig signal i årets val,” wrote Lucas Amgren and Christoffer Wahlgren. Young voters in Karlshamn have delivered a clear signal in the 2026 local and school elections, favoring a bourgeois and market-oriented political direction over socialist alternatives, according to an opinion piece published in Blekinge Läns Tidning by Lucas Amgren, district chairman for MUF Blekinge, and Christoffer Wahlgren, chairman for MUF Karlshamn.

Election Results and Mandate Distribution in Karlshamn

In the 2026 municipal election, parties advocating for economic right-wing policies secured a combined 29 of the 51 mandates in the municipal council, establishing a majority. This gives market-oriented parties control over the municipal council’s economic direction. This means a majority of the Karlshamn municipal council consists of parties that support a more bourgeois and market-oriented policy in economic matters.

In the municipal school election, the Moderate Party won 33.14 percent of the vote, securing over a 10 percentage point margin against the second-largest party. When combining all parties advocating for economic right-wing policies in the school election, the bloc gathered 64.78 percent of the votes, creating a substantial majority over left-wing parties.

Did You Know? In the national school election, the Moderate Party also finished as the largest party with 32.71 percent of the vote, while 30 percent of first-time voters cast their ballots for the party in the parliamentary election. It is evident that the youth of Karlshamn are following the national trend.

Young People Prioritize Jobs and Housing over Socialist Policies

According to Amgren and Wahlgren, young people in Karlshamn are prioritizing practical economic milestones. For their generation, politics centers on securing a first job, moving away from home, purchasing a first home, and retaining a larger share of their own income. The authors argue that traditional socialist policies make these steps systematically harder.

The representatives state that they want a municipality where hard work is rewarded, local businesses have room to grow, and young people retain greater freedom of choice in shaping their lives. They emphasize a future where security and optimism outweigh dependence on financial aid, and where the local government dares to adopt new approaches.
