Ukraine‘s President Zelenksy: No Russian Gas Transit, No Dependence on Moscow
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenksy has firmly stated that Ukraine will not allow Russia to profit from the war by continuing the transit of Russian gas through its territory. In a recent address, Zelenksy emphasized that any country relying on cheap Russian gas risks dependence on Moscow in the long run.
"Today, I spoke with Sloavakia’s Prime Minister Robert Fico. I made it clear: if gas isn’t from Russia, but instead from another country, we must know. We don’t want to play games. If another country receives Russian gas and then transits it, it’s the same as continuing to profit from this war and transferring money to Russia," Zelenksy underscored.
The Ukrainian President clarified that while Sloavakia has complained about losing money due to gas transit through Ukraine, the true losses are felt by Ukraine itself, especially during the ongoing conflict. "During wartime, it’s shameful to talk about money, because Ukraine is losing people. But pragmatically, Ukraine is losing much more on energy due to this war," he noted.
The announcement comes amidst the non-extension of the contract for Russian gas transit through Ukraine, set to expire in 2025. Sloavakia’s Prime Minister, Robert Fico, has been pushing for the continuation of Russian gas transit through Ukraine but faces resistance from the Ukrainian side.
Ukraine’s stance reflects its commitment to stamping out Russian influence and profiting from the conflict, even as nations like Sloavakia seek to maintain supplies at lower cost.
