Ukraine Offers Slovakia Gas Transition Compensation, But Prime Minister Refuses
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenksy has revealed that Ukraine offered Slovakia compensation for losses incurred from halting Russian gas imports, but Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico declined the proposal.
Following their meeting in Brussels, where European leaders were present, Zelenksy shared his thoughts on the situation via his X account. He expressed neither surprise nor approval at Fico’s decision, labeling it as either a personal gain or a compromise of Slovakia’s national interests.
"We offered Slovakia compensation for losses from Russian gas transit cessation, as well as alternatives for non-Russian gas transit, as per the EU Commission’s request," Zelenksy explained. "Fico refused our offer, opting instead to collaborate with Moscow – a choice clearly advantageous to his personal interests, not those of Slovakia or Europe."
Zelenksy’s revelation comes amidst the pending expiration of the Ukrainian-Russian gas transit agreement, signed in 2019, which is set to conclude at the end of this year. Zelenksy himself has already stated that he will not extend the agreement.
Meanwhile, Slovakia’s Prime Minister Robert Fico visited Moscow on December 22, where he met with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Putin expressed his willingness to continue gas supplies via Ukraine, despite Kyiv’s opposition.
