Detroit Mercy Titans Celebrate Legacy with 2026 Hall of Fame Inductions
The University of Detroit Mercy recently honored twelve of its athletic greats with induction into the 2026 Hall of Fame Class. The ceremony, held February 21-22, brought the total number of inductees to 169, recognizing a rich tradition of Titan Athletics established in 1977.

Chris Andrzejak – Baseball (1997-2000)
Pitcher Chris Andrzejak dominated the mound for the Titans, earning MCC Pitcher of the Year honors as a senior. He holds school records for innings pitched (292) and games started (43), and was instrumental in the team’s 1997 MCC title run, delivering key relief performances and securing two saves in the postseason.
Adam Bedell – Soccer (2010-2013)
Adam Bedell’s impact on the soccer field was immediate, and significant. Named Horizon League Player of the Year in 2012, he led the league in goals (11) that season. Throughout his four-year career, Bedell scored 23 goals and recorded 22 assists, and went on to play professionally after graduation.
Jerry Fitzgerald – Fencing (1959-1963)
Jerry Fitzgerald achieved All-American status in foil fencing in 1962. He amassed over 100 career wins, including a remarkable 44-4 record as a senior. Fitzgerald likewise participated in the US Olympic trials for the 1964 Olympics.
Derrick Hayes – Basketball (1996-1998)
Derrick Hayes quickly made his mark as a two-time First Team All-MCC performer. He led the Titans in scoring for two consecutive years and played a pivotal role in the team’s successful 1998 season, which included a share of the league title and an upset victory over St. John’s in the NCAA Tournament.
Jamie Hebden – Lacrosse (2010-2014)
Jamie Hebden was a three-time All-MAAC selection and a key defensive player for the Titans. He holds the school record for caused turnovers and helped lead the team to a MAAC championship in 2013.

Radek Papiez – Soccer (1991-1994)
Radek Papiez was a three-time All-MCC honoree in soccer, known for his playmaking ability. He holds school records for points and assists and helped the team achieve a school-record 16 wins during his junior year.
Mark Risch – Track & Field (1994-1998)
Mark Risch was a six-time All-MCC performer in track & field, specializing in the hurdles. He achieved NCAA provisional qualifying status as a senior and set school records in the event.
Nancy Scott (Horvat) – Fencing (1980-1984)
Nancy Scott was a two-time Most Outstanding Fencer for the school and a CoSIDA Academic All-District honoree. She was the first female fencer to reach 100 career wins and led the team to its best-ever finish.
Ed Zaliagiris – Baseball (1946-1948)
Ed Zaliagiris achieved a perfect 9-0 record over two seasons, with the longest consecutive win streak in school history. He also boasts the lowest ERA in school history and served with distinction in World War II, earning the Silver Star.
