Heavy Snowfall Claims Young Driver on Vitosa Road; Sofia Municipality Tightens Snow Clearance Rules

The condition of 19-year-old Kaloyan remains critical after he was struck by a falling snow-laden branch while driving on the Vitosa road, bTV reported. The young man is currently in the intensive care unit at the capital’s largest emergency hospital, "Pirogov," with medical staff working to stabilize him.

Late last night, Sofia Municipality announced enhanced requirements for the snow-clearing company responsible for Vitosa and increased measures to ensure access to the mountain. Following an emergency meeting, a decision was made to close two main roads for thorough cleaning from 3:00 AM to 7:00 AM.

However, confusion persists regarding responsibility for maintaining and pruning hazardous trees alongside the road. While the Vitosa road falls within the jurisdiction of Sofia Municipality, the Natural Park "Vitosha" clarified yesterday that tree management is not among their competencies.

The incident serves as a grim reminder of the potential dangers posed by snow-laden branches, particularly on frequently traveled roads like Vitosa. As winter sets in, authorities remind residents and drivers alike to exercise caution and remain vigilant to potential hazards.

Local residents and commuters have taken to social media to express their concerns and call for stricter enforcement of snow clearance and maintenance duties.

This incident comes amidst ongoing debates about the responsibility for roadside tree maintenance and the adequacy of current snow-clearing measures. As winter worsens, preservation of public safety on Vitosa and other major roads will undoubtedly be a key focus for local authorities.

As of now, no official statement has been released regarding the identity of the responsible party for roadside tree management. Efforts to reach Sofia Municipality for comment were unsuccessful at the time of publishing.
