A Verbal Assault in the Supreme Court

Delhi Police have arrested two Lucknow University law students, 24-year-old Prabal Pratap Singh and 23-year-old Chander Bhan, following a disruption at the Supreme Court on July 10. The arrests were triggered by a formal complaint from court security after Singh allegedly hurled abuses at the Chief Justice of India and threw case papers across the courtroom during a hearing presided over by Justices KV Viswanathan and Alok Aradhe.

The Petitioner’s Confrontation

The incident erupted while the Bench was hearing a petition filed by Singh, who was appearing as a petitioner-in-person to challenge an April 2026 Allahabad High Court judgment. The situation deteriorated quickly when Singh addressed the Bench, stating, “Mr judicial servant, I order you to order the registration of an FIR against the Assistant Commissioner of Police of Lucknow.”

The Petitioner’s Confrontation

Justice KV Viswanathan immediately challenged the petitioner: “You are ordering me? You are ordering us?” Singh’s response was curt: “That is all from my side. Everything is on record.” He then flung his case files into the air and directed verbal abuse toward the Chief Justice of India. Security personnel escorted him from the courtroom, and police later alleged that Singh obstructed officers as they attempted to restrain him. An FIR has since been registered at the Tilak Marg Police Station.

Judicial Restraint Amidst Chaos

Despite the blatant breach of decorum, the Bench noted in its July 10 order that it did not wish to initiate action against Singh, considering the condition of the petitioner.

Criminal Charges and Pending Investigation

With a formal FIR now registered, the pair could face charges related to the obstruction of security personnel and the disruption of judicial proceedings.
