Climate scientists have raised the alarm as the global average temperature has officially crossed the 1.5°C threshold above pre-industrial levels, marking a chilling milestone in humanity’s impact on the planet. The European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) confirmed the unprecedented rise in temperatures, with 2024 being the warmest year on record to date.
"These developments are truly alarming," said Carlo Buontempo, the director of C3S. "We’ve never seen such a consistent and rapid increase in global temperatures."
According to Copernicus, every month of 2024 was either the warmest or second-warmest on record for that particular month. The annual average temperature was a staggering 1.6°C higher than the pre-industrial period (1850-1900).
The consequences of climate change are now evident on every continent. Catastrophic wildfires and floods ravaged countries such as Bolivia, Venezuela, Nepal, Sudan, and Spain. Heatwaves claimed thousands of lives in Mexico and Saudi Arabia.
"Despite the repeated warnings from the scientific community, nations continue to fail to meet their responsibilities," lamented Chukwumerije Okereke, a professor of global climate governance at the University of Bristol.
CO2 concentrations in the atmosphere reached a new high of 422 parts per million (ppm) in 2024, underscoring the urgent need for decisive action.
While acknowledging that it’s not too late to avert global catastrophe, Buontempo stressed that immediate and substantial cuts to greenhouse gas emissions are indispensable to prevent temperatures from rising to dangerous levels.
