3 Regions Face Rains Across Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao

Typhoon Choi-Wan, located 2,610 kilometers east of extreme northern Luzon as of 3 p.m. on Sunday, is expected to bring rain across most of Luzon, parts of the Visayas, and the entire Mindanao, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa). The storm was moving northward at 15 kilometers per hour, carrying maximum sustained winds of 175 km/h near the center and gustiness reaching 215 km/h.

Satellite data reveals extensive reach of Typhoon Choi-Wan

Weather specialist Grace CastaƱeda-Carpio pointed out the storm’s extensive reach using satellite data. “We can see here in our satellite animation our bright white areas are the dense clouds that are associated with the trough of Typhoon Choi-Wan,” CastaƱeda-Carpio said. The system’s broad extension reaches far beyond the storm’s immediate center, which remains outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR).

Earlier updates from state forecasters placed the system at varying distances east of Luzon with maximum sustained winds ranging from 130 km/h to 155 km/h. Despite these shifts in intensity measurements as the storm progresses northward, forecasters maintain that the system will not enter the PAR as it tracks toward Japan.

Outer bands bring scattered rains and flash flood risks

The outer bands and trough of the system are directly impacting domestic weather patterns. Western Visayas, the Negros Island Region, Central Visayas, Leyte, Southern Leyte, and the entire Mindanao face scattered rain showers and thunderstorms. State weather bureaus have cautioned that moderate to at times heavy rains in these regions could trigger flash floods and landslides.

For Monday, Luzon is anticipated to experience cloudy skies accompanied by isolated or sudden downpours. Meanwhile, the Visayas and Mindanao will continue to see scattered rains driven by the typhoon’s extensive trough. Outside of the areas influenced by Choi-Wan’s extension, the remainder of the country experiences generally fair weather or isolated rain showers tied to localized thunderstorms.
