Breaking: At least 33 Dead, Over 1500 Escape in Mozambique Prison Uprising
Maputo, Mozambique – Mozambique police report at least 33 people have been killed and over 1500 inmates have escaped from Maputo Central Prison during a prison uprising.
According to police chief Bernardino Rafael, approximately 1534 inmates escaped, but around 150 have already been recaptured. In addition to the 33 fatalities, at least 15 people have been injured.
Justice Minister Helena Kida told local media that the disturbances started inside the prison and were not linked to the protests that have been gripping Mozambique in recent days.
Recent Unrest in Mozambique
Christmas Eve saw at least 21 deaths in clashes between protesters and security forces. Among the dead were two police officers. Over 70 protesters were arrested, and armed police are patrolling the capital Maputo. A total of 25 people were injured, including 13 police officers.
The unrest is linked to the country’s Supreme Court declaring President Nyusi’s party, Frelimo, the winner of the October elections. Opposition leader Venancio Mondlane contests the results, alleging widespread fraud.
Cyclone Chido’s Devastation
Mozambique recently faced severe destruction from Cyclone Chido, with over 120 deaths and tens of thousands of homes destroyed. The country continues to grapple with the aftermath of the storm, along with the political tension and now, the prison uprising.
